About HolidayOrNot
One question, answered fast: is today a holiday where you are, and what is open?
What this site does
HolidayOrNot gives you a plain YES or NO for whether today is a public or statutory holiday in your province, state or country. Underneath the answer you get a quick view of whether post offices, banks, stock markets, schools, government offices and liquor stores are likely to be open, plus the next holidays coming up.
Where the holiday data comes from
Official holiday dates come from the open Nager.Date public holiday data set, which covers more than 100 countries. We refresh it daily. The date we check is always today's date in the time zone of the place you are looking at, so a visitor in Vancouver and one in Halifax each get the right answer for their own day.
How we decide what is open
A holiday is only the starting point. Many holidays are observed in some provinces or states and not others, so we check your region first and use a majority rule when you only pick a country. From there we apply service rules, for example:
- Banks and the national postal service are normally closed on statutory holidays and on weekends.
- Stock exchanges follow their own calendars, which include days like Good Friday that are not public holidays everywhere.
- Some days, such as Remembrance Day or the Civic Holiday in Canada, are observed unevenly. We say so instead of giving a flat yes or no.
- Retail rules differ by province. Ontario, for example, has its own rules on which holidays shops must close.
When a service has limited hours or the answer depends on the provider, we mark it as limited and tell you to check with them directly.
How your location is found
We use the approximate location that your connection reveals to our hosting provider, which is usually accurate to your province or state. We do not ask for GPS, and we do not store it. If we guess wrong, use the location picker on any page to choose a different country or region. See the privacy policy for details.
Please double check anything important
HolidayOrNot is an independent information site, not a government service, and it is not affiliated with any bank, postal service or retailer. Holiday dates are reliable, but opening hours can vary by branch, store and local policy. If you are travelling, mailing something time sensitive or planning payroll, confirm with the provider.
